Mozart Workshop February 2018

Mozart Workshop

Friendship and inspiring musical leadership at our annual workshop

‘Professional leadership and good company’, ‘inspiring musical direction’, ‘very good tuition’, ‘honing singing skills with like-minded people’, ‘marvellous intensity of the singing’, ‘great camaraderie’, ‘wonderful atmosphere’, ‘warm welcome’ – just some of the appreciative comments summing up our Mozart Requiem Workshop on 17 February 2018, led by our new musical director Howard Ionascu, with Peter Adcock at the piano.

Voice warm up‘Novel and exciting approach’

Singers appreciated ‘the excellent musical director and accompanist’, ‘the balance of challenge and encouragement’ and Howard’s ‘novel and exciting approach’, which another participant described as ‘fun but professional’.

People valued the way that Howard balanced technique with musical expression. One participant said that it was ‘good to work on technique and musicality rather than just romping through the whole piece’, while another liked the ‘detailed practice of selected parts rather than trying to do it all’. Conversely, some people would have preferred less detail and perhaps some history about the work.

Piano AccompanimentThere were many comments about Howard’s useful exercises that helped refine our performance and had positive results on our singing. People found scrambling – when the voice parts are mixed up – and the challenge of singing from memory very rewarding, making us concentrate.

One criticism was that people couldn’t always see Howard when he strayed from the podium or sat down.

Singers really valued Peter Adcock’s beautiful accompaniment – both virtuosic and supportive.

Delicious cake in spacious surroundings

There was much praise for the organisation of the day, the hard work put in and the delicious catering. Separating the queues for tea and coffee into different rooms worked well this year. People found the venue spacious, comfortable and pleasant and commented on the good acoustics and the convenient central location of the Mint Church.

One singer even said it was ‘worth coming from London’, while someone who had been to an EPC workshop previously congratulated the choir on ‘another great day’.

We will make certain that all the information is correct next year – there was a discrepancy in the start time advertised on the website and the workshop brochure.

We’ve already had at least one request for the date of our 2019 workshop. And we can announce that it will be held on16th February 2019 at The Mint Methodist Church, Fore Street, Exeter.
